Government of Canada awards $100,000 in funding to Habitation du Patriote for expansion into European markets

    SAINT-HENRI-DE-TAILLON, QC, Jan. 23 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Denis
Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the
awarding of $100,000 in funding, half of it in the form of a non-repayable
contribution, to the firm Habitation du Patriote. This financial assistance
will be used to help the company carry out an intensive commercialization
strategy on the European continent. Generating an overall investment of
$440,000, this project will foster the creation and maintenance of five jobs
in the Saint-Henri-de-Taillon area.
An innovative fledgling firm established in 2004, Habitation du Patriote
specializes in the design and construction of ecological log buildings. The
company has developed a process for manufacturing machined standardized logs
ranging from 27.94 cm (11 inches) to 38.10 cm (15 inches) in diameter. The
result of three years of development, this process has enabled the SME to set
itself apart from the competition as Quebec's only manufacturer of such
large-dimension logs.
"In today's economic context, enterprises operating in the secondary
processing of wood need to put the greatest possible energy into ensuring
their viability. Canada Economic Development is proud to support entrepreneurs
who, like those at the head of Habitation du Patriote, are looking to forge
ahead with marketing initiatives that promise to create wealth and generate
employment. I am convinced that this project will serve to encourage other
forestry firms to undertake steps to commercialize their products on European
soil," noted the Minister of State.
Habitation du Patriote pre-fabricates 25 models of homes that are sold in
five regions across the province, namely Québec, Eastern Townships,
Lanaudière, Laurentides and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Since it began operating,
the company has experienced a steady rise in sales and is seeking to further
increase its revenues by breaking into the European market.
This financial assistance from Canada Economic Development has been
awarded under the SME Competitiveness component of the Business and Regional
Growth program, a measure aimed at strengthening the conditions conducive to
the sustainable growth of Quebec's regions and SMEs. This Habitation du
Patriote international marketing project is expected to help strengthen the
economic base of Saint-Henri-de-Taillon, a small community with a population
of less than 800 inhabitants.
