TORONTO, Sept. 17 /CNW/ - The Health Professionals Recruitment Tour kicks
off in Ottawa on Sunday September 21, 2008 and will travel 1500 kilometers
making stops in Kingston, London and Hamilton before finishing in Toronto on
September 25, 2008.
Coordinated by the Professional Association of Internes and Residents
(PAIRO), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the
Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, the week long tour is an
opportunity for over 100 communities to meet face to face with medical
students, young doctors and allied health care workers. Much of Ontario
remains underserviced and the Recruitment Tour enables participants to
showcase their communities.
"Our members appreciate being able to meet face to face with recruiters
from under-serviced Ontario communities," said Dr. Alim Pardhan, President of
PAIRO. "Most residents are working in excess of 60 hours per week providing
health care in teaching hospitals while training for their specialty exams.
They just don't have the chance to get out and travel around the province to
find out what jobs are available," said Dr. Pardhan, a fifth year resident in
Emergency Medicine at McMaster University. Attracting qualified health care
practitioners to move to underserviced areas of the province remains a major
focus for many Ontario communities.
Since 1993, PAIRO has been actively advocating for effective ways to
attract new doctors to underserviced areas. This year's Health Professionals
Recruitment Tour will involve more than 100 communities from Dryden to
