PRELIMINARY BEE WEB CAST ON WWW.CANSPELL.COM
FRIDAY, APRIL 18 - 10AM ET/7AM PT
TORONTO, March 25 /CNW/ - Global Television returns as the exclusive
broadcaster of the 2008 Canwest Canspell National Finals.
On Saturday, April 19th - 8pm ET/PT, Liza Fromer (The List on SLICE(TM))
hosts the 4th annual spelling event from Ottawa, as 22 young candidates
compete for the championship title, a $15,000 AIC Award contributed toward
RESPs and the coveted Canspell Cup. The broadcast will also include colour
commentary from 16-year-old Finola Hackett, a former Canspell National
Champion and 2nd place finisher at the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
"The sheer drive and determination of these bright young minds is
inspirational, and provides for a nail-biting competition," said Christine
Shipton, SVP, Drama and Factual Content, Canwest Broadcasting. "We're proud to
continue our support and share this experience with audiences nationwide."
School spelling bees were held during January in all 10 provinces, with
approximately 225,000 students taking part. Some 1,200 students advanced from
the school level to compete at regional bees in 22 cities - Victoria,
Vancouver, Prince George, Kamloops, Penticton, Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge,
Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor, Ottawa,
Montreal, Saint John, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and St. John's.
Canwest Canspell remains as a free educational program open to students
across Canada, thanks to the generous support of the presenting sponsor,
Canada Post. Support from Canada Post means that top Canadian spellers will be
able to compete not only in Ottawa, but also internationally at the Scripps
bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
22 winning spellers along with an accompanying parent will be flown to
the National Finals in Ottawa as well as the Scripps National Spelling Bee
courtesy of Air Canada.
