Global Refund Canada calls cancellation of individual VRP a "lose-lose" decision

OTTAWA, March 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Global Refund Canada a subsidiary of the
Global Refund Group providing Visitor Tax Refunds for over 25 years in 37
countries calls the decision to terminate the individual traveler component of
the GST/HST Visitors' Rebate Program a "lose - lose" decision.
"No one wins with this decision" said Kevin Boughen, President of Global
Refund Canada Ltd. "We did our best to demonstrate to the Conservatives that
this is a lose-lose decision, there is no money to be saved by canceling this
program, the only result will be lost jobs and further damage to the tourism
industry." Global Refund Canada serves over 200,000 tourists per year and
employs 60 people in Canada.
Over the past several months, Global Refund has been part of a coalition
that fought to save the Visitors Rebate Program and commissioned an Economic
Report to study the impact of canceling the program. "The Report confirmed
what we always suspected, cancellation of the program will cost Canada -
hurting Canadian tourism and negatively impacting the economy as whole. Does
this government really believe it knows more than every other OECD country?"
asked Boughen.
Canada now has the dubious distinction of being the only OECD country to
cancel a value-added tax rebate program for individual travelers.
