Getting Results for Ontario Families

McGuinty Government Moving Ontario Forward By Strengthening Education,
    Health And Prosperity Of People

QUEEN'S PARK, June 5 /CNW/ - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty marked the
end of the spring session of the legislature saying his government is getting
results for families by improving the public services and infrastructure that
hardworking families and businesses depend on.
"We've shown that Ontario works best when we work together," said Premier
McGuinty. "Our balanced approach has delivered results: more doctors and
nurses, fewer strikes and more help for students, and more opportunities for
Ontario's workers and businesses."
Premier McGuinty made his comments after Lieutenant Governor James
Bartleman prorogued the Ontario Legislature, ending a busy spring session that
saw passage of 14 government bills. The Premier highlighted some of the
results that have been achieved for families over the past several months,
including:

        - Increasing funding for students in our schools by $781 million
        - Investing in the $2.1 billion Ontario Child Benefit that will help
600,000 families with nearly 1.3 million children
        - Increasing the minimum wage to $10.25 by 2010, providing fairness
          and opportunity for working people
        - Tracking paediatric wait times for the first time in Ontario, and
funding an additional 2,000 surgeries for children in 2007/08
        - Ensuring fairness for firefighters with workers' compensation
claims by committing to recognize certain cancers and heart
          injuries as work-related
        - Getting tougher on drunk drivers and street racers
        - Cutting high business education taxes by $540 million over seven
          years, and
        - Banning the sale of inefficient light bulbs by 2012 and launching
          five province-wide conservation initiatives.

"Look at how far we've come, together, in just four years," said Premier
McGuinty. "We have much more to do, but I'm confident we can do it. I know
there's no limit to what we can achieve when we work and build and dream,
together."
