TORONTO, July 25 /CNW/ - To facilitate young children's transition to
school, TVOKids presents a special Get Ready for School programming package.
The centrepiece is a new six-part series, hosted by every preschooler's friend
and role model, Gisèle of the Big Backyard, and featuring her friends Sticks
the squirrel, Melvin the skunk, and Jay the blue jay.
As Sticks prepares to go to school, preschoolers can relate to his fears
and concerns: How do I make a friend? What do I do if I have a question? What
if I get hungry? The programs break down these common fears for kids, parents,
and caregivers so children can familiarize themselves with what's ahead.
Children benefit from many helpful vignettes: visits to actual schools; the
perspectives of other preschoolers on the transition ahead; advice from the
experts - actual grade one students; an introduction to some of the adults
that they will encounter in school, such as teachers, the principal or even
the custodian. Only Gisèle's Big Backyard offers such content designed with
educators to complement the learning goals of the Ontario kindergarten
curriculum.
A new Charlie and Lola back-to-school special, entitled "Everything is
Different and Not the Same," also sets the stage for starting school. Lola is
excited about the new autumn school term, but soon finds that autumn and going
back to school can mean many other changes, too. Based on the award-winning
children's picture books by Lauren Child, the animated Charlie and Lola series
presents the familiar ups and downs of older brother Charlie and his spirited
little sister Lola. Together they find distinctive ways to handle the little
issues that young children encounter every day.
Kids and parents can also discover extensive Get Ready for School
activities and resources online through integrated web sections at tvokids.com
and tvoparents.com. Starting August 4 at tvokids.com, kids can visit the Get
Ready for School centre, where they can explore a welcoming kindergarten
classroom. They can click on various areas of the classroom, such as the
library centre where they can learn more from Gisèle. Easy navigation buttons
also allow kids to select and screen short videos about other aspects of
kindergarten, such as getting to school, and bathroom breaks. And, starting
September 1, kids can enjoy engaging new activities in the Get Ready for
School centre at tvokids.com. These include Dressup, as kids help Sticks put
together an outfit appropriate for the weather outside, as well as Playtime,
SnackTime, Music Maker and Crafts.
Parents can tap their own special section to help their little ones make
a seamless transition to school at tvoparents.com - with tipsheets written by
early-learning experts and Stacie Goldin, TVO's own in-house educator, along
with other articles and videos.
