George Kehoe named School Board Member of the Year



    DARTMOUTH, NS, May 12 /CNW/ - The Nova Scotia School Boards Association
(NSSBA) is pleased to announce that George Kehoe, vice chair of the Strait
Regional School Board (SRSB), is the 2009 recipient of the School Board Member
of the Year award. He will be honoured on Friday, May 15th during a banquet
for the NSSBA 55th annual general meeting and conference at the Charles V.
Keating Millenium Centre, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S.
    George has been a member of the Strait Regional School Board for 15
years. A retired educator, his involvement with the Nova Scotia School Boards
Association is extensive. He has served several times as his board's
representative on the association's board of directors, and has held positions
of 1st and 2nd vice president on the executive. He has completed all five
modules of the NSSBA school board governance development program. Jack Beaton,
superintendent of schools, describes him as an excellent board member whose
"great understanding of public education continually supports the work of all
board staff."
    George is known for his holistic approach to student education,
encouraging the involvement of parents, staff and educational partners in the
classroom. An active community volunteer, he spends his spare time working
closely with many groups including the Richmond Retired Teachers Association,
St. Anne's Hospital Board, Development Isle Madame Association and adult
education programs.
    This is the 11th year for the NSSBA School Board Member of the Year
Award. It was developed to recognize exemplary school board member service at
either the local or provincial level that results in positive change for
students.
    A selection committee comprised of persons external to the association
determines the recipient of the award. Rick Piper, director of corporate
accounts, Medavie Blue Cross has served on the panel for two years and chaired
the process this year. He was joined by Paul Sarty, vice president, Manager
Plan Benefits-Maritime Region, Johnson Inc, Ross Lloy, product and concept
specialist, Talbot Marketing and Alex Wilson, account executive, Halifax
Herald.
