MONTREAL, Jan. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - Development and Peace calls for an
immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The intensification of the
hostilities in the region, particularly the Israeli ground offensive, has made
the distribution of humanitarian aid very difficult for Development and Peace
partner Caritas Jerusalem and other aid organizations.
"We are extremely concerned with the violence raging on and particularly
sensitive to the plight of the civilian population in the Gaza strip" says
Gilio Brunelli, Director of International Programs at Development and Peace.
Joining its voice to that of Caritas Internationalis, Development and
Peace urges all parties involved to lay down their arms without delay so that
the victims can be cared for. The organization also asks that regional and
international actors work together to bring lasting peace to the region.
Development and Peace is currently working with Caritas Jerusalem to
provide emergency supplies to thousands of residents of Gaza.
Development and Peace has worked in Gaza since 1983. The organization
currently has a regular program in the region that aims to build peace,
generate income for the poorest and promote human rights.
Development and Peace is currently accepting donations from members of
the Canadian public wishing to help the victims of the conflict in Gaza.
