Gateway Drive Public School Awarded Canadian Olympic School Program Grand Prize

GUELPH, ON, June 18 /CNW/ - The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Premier
National Partner RBC, and RBC Olympian Jacqueline Cook presented Grade 3-4
teacher Jason McCoy and the students of Gateway Drive Public School today with
the Canadian Olympic School Program Grand Prize.
As one of the eight grand prize winners, Gateway Drive Public School
received an Olympic-themed sports kit, courtesy of RBC. The sports kit
includes an array of sports equipment such as basketballs, soccer and
volleyballs, hockey sticks and pucks, 12 gold medals, 12 scrimmage vests, an
Olympic Games banner and much more.
"The teaching activities are relevant, generate good discussion and tie
in well with our curriculum," said McCoy. "Participating in the Canadian
Olympic School Program has enabled my students to further develop their
interest in sports, the Olympics, and the importance of living an active and
healthy lifestyle."
Presented by RBC and available online at www.olympicschool.ca, the
Canadian Olympic School Program is a free, bilingual online teaching resource
that offers engaging information about the Olympic Games and Canadian athletes
as a tool to educate, motivate and inspire students to become Smarter, Better
and Stronger. Developed in collaboration with teachers from across Canada, the
program is designed to promote Olympic values and the importance of health and
physical activity.
To enter the contest, teachers were asked to submit an entry form
outlining how they planned to use the Canadian Olympic School Program in their
classroom. On May 8, a total of eight grand prize winners were randomly
selected in regions throughout Canada.
"This is a phenomenal program in that it brings the Olympics a little
closer to home for young people across the country," said Cook, a 2004
Olympian in rowing. "As a young person I remember thinking that Olympians were
superhuman. One of the really important messages the program teaches is that
Olympians and Paralympians are just everyday people, and that the elements of
their success - discipline, commitment, and passion - can be practiced by
anyone."
Now in its 20th year, the Canadian Olympic School Program links stories
about Canadian Olympians and Olympic hopefuls from various sports into lesson
plans and adaptable classroom-ready activities in the areas of physical
education, health, nutrition, reading, language and social studies for
students in Grades 4 to 6.
Using Olympic sports and RBC Olympians as inspiration, this year's
program added three new units that were designed to reinforce the importance
of staying active and maintaining a healthy diet. The new units focused on
physical education, reading comprehension skills and nutrition.
"The Canadian Olympic School Program is designed to make learning fun by
engaging students in sports and the Olympic Movement," said Marc Gélinas, COC
Director, Athlete and Community Relations. "Through the support of RBC, this
program continues to serve as a valuable learning tool for over 11,000
teachers across Canada."
The Canadian Olympic Committee is a national, private, not-for-profit
organization committed to sport excellence. It is responsible for all aspects
