Front-Line Registered Nurses Mark 2011 Day of Mourning

TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) is today remembering the registered nurses, allied health professionals and thousands of other Ontario workers who have lost their lives or suffered injury as the province marks the 2011 Day of Mourning.

ONA's 57,000 members will remember registered nurses Heather Taylor, who died when she acquired an infectious disease while working in London, Lori Dupont, who was murdered by a colleague while working in Windsor, and Toronto RNs Nelia Larosa and Tecla Lin who contracted SARS while working during the outbreak.

"This time to remember our colleagues and fellow registered nurses is vital," believes ONA President Linda Haslam-Stroud, RN. "Nurses continue to be among the most injured and ill of all professionals because of the high occupational health and safety hazards we encounter daily while caring for our patients. This fact, combined with heavy workloads and the risk of workplace violence as patients and their families grow frustrated with wait times, makes nursing an often dangerous profession."

Nurses will mark the day at events in every corner of the province, including Windsor and Toronto. In Toronto, ONA nurses will attend the Day of Mourning event Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square at noon.

The Ontario Nurses' Association is the union representing 57,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals and more than 12,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
