From Millionaire to Milk: Zip.ca members vote for their Oscar favourites

                - Do fan favourites match critical acclaim? -

OTTAWA, Feb. 20 /CNW Telbec/ - All eyes will be on Hollywood this Sunday
night as the 81st Academy Awards fete the best of the best in the film
industry. While industry insiders may have the final say when it comes to
Academy voting, it's the fans that make or break a movie at the box office.
Once again, Zip.ca has reached out to our members to see who they think will
take home Hollywood's most coveted award.
Over the past few weeks, Zip.ca's over 40,000 members have had the
opportunity to take part in our annual Oscar poll, voting for their
favourites' in four categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and
Best Actress. While historically our members have been very accurate in
predicting Oscar winners, we wanted to see how our choices compared to those
of prominent film critic Roger Ebert, to get an early idea of how things might
turn out.
Slumdog Millionaire was the odds on favourite for Best Picture, capturing
57 percent of Zip member votes, more than double that of second place The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button garnering only 26 percent. Roger Ebert agreed,
giving Slumdog Millionaire the thumbs up. Danny Boyle, director of the
breakout Bollywood hit also received 57 percent of Zip votes and the nod from
Ebert to receive the award for Best Director.
Zip.ca members are clearly hoping for Kate Winslet to take home the Oscar
for her role in The Reader (57%), while Roger Ebert was less decisive giving
even odds to Winslet and Meryl Streep for her turn in Doubt.
The dividing line between the popular critic and Zip.ca's members was
drawn in the Best Actor category. Zip.ca members threw their support behind
sentimental favourite Mickey Rourke for his comeback role in The Wrestler.
Rourke received 45 percent of Zip votes while Sean Penn pulled in 33 percent.
Those members may be on to something as Roger Ebert stands firmly behind Penn
for his role in Milk.
All of these nominated films and more than 72,000 others are available on
DVD for rent at Zip.ca.
