EYE WEEKLY reveals the winner of its Give Toronto a New Nickname
Contest-chosen by a panel of local celebrity judges
TORONTO, Feb. 23 /CNW/ - You can put Hogtown back in the pen. Return
T.O. to your alphabet soup. Store the T-Dot wherever it is you keep
your MC Hammer pants. Toronto has a new nickname. Welcome to El Toro.
Congratulations to EYE WEEKLY reader Tim Sproll for submitting the
winning entry to EYE WEEKLY's nickname contest. Over 500 readers
proposed new monikers, ranging from the openly dismissive (The Big
Envy) to the exalted (Dreamopolis). But El Toro was the clear winner among the magazine's panel of celebrity
judges—including comedian Russell Peters, Metric lead singer Emily
Haines, CFRB host John Tory and Raptors power forward Amir Johnson—for
its "mystique," its "delightfully multicultural tinge" and its
indication that Toronto is "an aggressive player in North American and
To wit: El Toro plays off the first four letters of the city's name, and it's
reminiscent of The Toros, our former Western Hockey League team. Other
notable contenders included: T-Bone, DiverCity, The Big Maple, The
Rocket, Pronto and Skytown.
