Yum! Brands Launches Global Campaign to Raise Awareness of Hunger and
Funds for the United Nations World Food Program
WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 /CNW/ -- Friends of the World Food Program (Friends
of WFP) today welcomed the launch of World Hunger Relief Week, a global
consumer campaign that will benefit the United Nations World Food Program
(WFP). World Hunger Relief Week is spearheaded by Yum! Brands, the world's
largest restaurant company in terms of system units with approximately 35,000
restaurants in more than 110 countries and territories and parent of the KFC,
Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver's and A&W All-American Food Restaurants
The campaign, which will run from October 14th through October 20th, will
increase awareness about hunger, engage volunteers, and raise critically
needed funds to help WFP serve the world's areas of greatest need.
"This unprecedented and innovative campaign brings together the public
and private sector to address one of the most pressing issues of our time: the
world's hunger crisis," said Friends of WFP President and CEO Karen
Sendelback. "Hunger is a global concern and an issue that faces each of us no
matter where we live and work. Through World Hunger Relief Week, we can all
make a difference to stop world hunger."
"With the World Food Program, Yum! Brands has the right partner to make a
significant change to leave the world a better place than we found it," said
Yum! Brands Chairman and CEO David C. Novak. "I am very proud of our
commitment to collectively save lives."
The funds collected during World Hunger Relief Week through in-store
promotions and online donations will help feed thousands of families around
the world. A donation of just $1.00 feeds five children for a day. Yum!
Brands' goal is to raise enough funds to help WFP feed at least 500,000
children, their mothers, fathers and many others.
During World Hunger Relief Week, Yum! Brands is leveraging the power of
the internet to reach millions of people through the www.fromhungertohope.com
website and other online activity.
More than one million employees, franchisees, and vendors of Yum! Brands,
KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants in over 100
countries will support the campaign.
The company is committed to fighting hunger and providing funds and
volunteer support through employees. As the world's largest donor of prepared
food, Yum! has provided approximately 12 million pounds of food a year ($50
million) in the U.S. for more than a decade. Yum! Brands is the primary
sponsor of the Dare To Care Food Bank based in Louisville, KY, committing $1
million annually to the organization since 2002.
Friends of WFP is also pleased to announce the appointment of David C.
Novak, Chairman and CEO of Yum! Brands, to the organization's Board of
Directors. "His in-depth knowledge of corporate giving and vision will enhance
our work, his unique background and perspective will strengthen our
deliberations, and all of us look forward to working with him," said Board
Chairman Marshall Matz.
