Only International Monster Supercross Stop
TORONTO, March 17 /CNW/ - In a year dominated by excitement on the track,
Toronto gears up to host the only International stop of the 2008 MONSTER
ENERGY(R) SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP. Canadian DUSTY KLATT will put his racing
skills to the test against series leader CHAD REED and front-runners KEVIN
WINDHAM, ANDREW SHORT and DAVID MILLSAPS on SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2008 at ROGERS
The 2008 season has seen Australian CHAD REED return to the top of the
podium with a consistent and strong race approach. The winner of the 2006 race
title in Toronto and the 2004 AMA Supercross class champion, REED's
performance this season makes him a strong contender for another podium finish
After finishing no worse than second in the first seven races of the
MONSTER ENERGY(R) SUPERCROSS season, REED is looking human and has opened the
door to his competitors. This year, there have been five different race
champions and only 100 points separate first from fifth place. With a strong
roster of riders set to take to the course, the Toronto championship race will
be action packed, high flying and memorable.
Defending Monster AMA Supercross Champion JAMES STEWART will not be in
Toronto as he battles a knee injury. Competing in the first two races of the
season, STEWART finished second and first respectively, but has remained on
the sidelines since that time.
MONSTER ENERGY(R) SUPERCROSS, an FIM World Championship, is an off-road
motorcycle racing competition, produced inside a stadium, where dirt is
brought in and sculpted using construction equipment. In order to prepare for
the Toronto race, over 500 truckloads of dirt will be brought into Rogers
Centre. Widely regarded as the king of extreme sports, AMA Supercross is
considered the NASCAR of motocross.
During the course of the 20 lap race, riders can hit speeds in excess of
60 mph and soar as far as 70 feet in distance while flying as high as a
three-story building off jumps called triples.
In the previous three seasons of AMA Supercross, more than 800,000 fans
have enjoyed the thrills and spills of the circuit. When they were here in
2006, over 33,000 enjoyed the show.
