Forget Route 66: Canadians long for lighthouses and lobster

AIG Travel Guard Ultimate Road Trip Survey offers summer road trip
    inspiration

TORONTO, June 18 /CNW/ - Get your motor runnin'. Head out on the highway.
Looking for adventure...and lobster? According to the AIG Travel Guard
Ultimate Road Trip Survey, Canadians said their top road trip is a feast out
east: the ultimate lobster dinner and scenic tour of lighthouses along the
east coast. For lobsters and lighthouses, or pinot noir and pedicures, now is
the time to start planning that ultimate summer road trip.
"Two weeks through the Grand Canyon or just a few days shopping across
the border, thousands of Canadians will drive out of their province - and out
of the country - this summer for their vacations," says Joel Donin, director
of marketing, AIG Travel Guard. "Whether you live in Vancouver or Halifax,
there are some amazing experiences just a short drive away, making the road
trip an ideal summer vacation for families and couples alike."

The AIG Travel Guard Ultimate Road Trip Survey found:
    - Lobsters and lighthouses: Taking a scenic lighthouse tour along the
east coast and searching out the ultimate lobster dinner is what
23 per cent of Canadians dream about for a driving vacation.
    - Pacific Coast drive: One in five survey respondents would choose to
drive the Pacific Coast highway from San Francisco to San Diego.
    - Marvelling at the beauty of the Appalachians: a drive along the Blue
Ridge Parkway was the top choice of 12 per cent of Canadians.
    - Being the ultimate fan: men were five times more likely than women to
say their ultimate road trip would be to follow their favourite major
        league baseball team.

Whatever road trip you choose this summer, before you hit the open road,
it is important to protect yourself and your family from the unexpected,
especially medical emergencies. Good travel insurance from a global insurance
provider like AIG Travel Guard can not only ensure you are protected for
emergencies, but it can also help you find the ultimate corn dog on Route 66.
"Canadians who would automatically purchase travel insurance when they
travel by plane often do not think about the need for insurance when they are
travelling by car," says Donin. "The truth is that travel insurance is
essential for any trip outside of your home province. For medical coverage and
even concierge service, travel insurance can provide you with protection and
amenities to help make your road trip run smoothly."
There are some key features to look for in a travel insurance plan before
you head off on your trip. AIG Travel Guard's Concierge Service is included in
all of its plans and can help you with any detail of your trip from
step-by-step directions to the nearest hotel or tickets to the latest show. If
you have to cancel a reservation last minute, Change of Mind(R) coverage means
you can be reimbursed for up to $400 of the non-refundable portion of your
trip.
Additionally, if you rented a car for your road trip, purchasing the car
loss and damage waiver through a travel insurance company can cost you much
less than through the rental car company. Plus, you get the added benefit of
other travel insurance coverages.
Travel Guard's complete family of travel insurance and assistance service
plans can be purchased online at www.travelguard.ca, through Travel Guard's
24-hour World Service Center (1.866.648.8422), or from a travel agent.
The AIG Travel Guard Ultimate Road Trip Survey was conducted by Angus
Reid Strategies in May 2008. It was a sample of 1,004 Canadian adults with a
maximum margin of error of +/-3.1 19 times out of 20.
