For the second year running, IGA will contribute over $1 million to environmental projects in Quebec

MONTREAL, April 6 /CNW Telbec/ - IGA retailers are proud to announce that
they are renewing their agreement for a second year with Jour de la Terre and
will again contribute more than $1 million to environmental projects in
Quebec's regions.
IGA announced in June 2008 that savings generated by consumers opting for
reusable bags would fund more than $1 million worth of environmental projects
in the province. Already 57 projects have been chosen to receive the first
series of grants from Fonds Ecomunicipalité IGA, and there are more to come.
The use of reusable bags by IGA customers reduced the number of
disposable bags given out in the store by more than 25%.
"Since consumers who bring their own bags save IGA retailers money, we
wanted to find the best way to reward this responsible gesture. We decided to
reinvest all these savings in environmental projects. Not only are we reducing
the amount of plastic in circulation, we are giving a leg-up to sustainable
development projects in Quebec's regions," declared Luc Daigle, owner of IGA
extra, Sainte-Thérèse.
By renewing their association with Jour de la Terre, IGA retailers have
reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the planet. This partnership
highlights the need to preserve the environment for future generations.
IGA retailers invite municipalities, environmental non-governmental
organizations (ENGOs) and schools to apply now on the website
www.jourdelaterre.org.

IGA is the biggest group of independent grocers in Canada, with roots in
Quebec dating back to 1953. IGA retailers are constantly looking for new ways
to better serve their clientele. www.iga.net
