First plug in hybrid solar electric vehicle in Canada

DURHAM, ON, May 16 /CNW/ - Solera, Veridian and Hymotion, three leading
edge Ontario companies covering the energy and transportation sectors have
collaborated on an advanced environmental vehicle technology project which has
now completed the second stage with the addition of solar panels to the roof
of a 100+ mpg plug-in hybrid that had been modified through the addition of
rechargeable batteries by Hymotion.
Solera Sustainable Energies Company(R), a leading provider of solar power
solutions in Canada, has added a 'sunroof' to the vehicle consisting of three
solar panels that will generate up to 240 watts in full sunshine. The panels
utilize the world's most efficient commercially available solar cells and were
locally manufactured to Solera's specification by Open Energy Corp.
Solera is committed to providing a suite of sustainable energy solutions
for Canadian consumers. "Whether at home, at work or on the road, we are
pushing clean energy technologies into a leading role," said Solera President,
Leonard Allen. Solera has previously worked in the transportation sector and
is expanding the use of solar power to aid in developing fully sustainable
transportation in the future.
"Veridian is committed to delivering innovation in energy solutions to
our customers. We are therefore promoting connected, smart energy systems that
include distributed solar power and energy storage, to reduce the overall
electrical system and local peak loads, reduce the need for transmission and
distribution infrastructure and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution,"
said Veridian President & CEO, Michael Angemeer. "It is exciting to be
involved in a project that may also bring further interest in advanced energy
and vehicle systems and materials to Ontario and Durham Region, the Energy
Capital of Ontario.
This vehicle is an example of a mobile connected energy system that will
also be charged from solar panels located at the Veridian head office. By
generating power from the sun, and eventually using less expensive night-time
off-peak grid electricity through a standard electrical outlet, measured by a
smart meter, pollution and CO2 emissions are reduced. With aerodynamic styling
this vehicle not only promises to reduce the automobile's impact on global
warming, but also offers the performance demanded by serious drivers. The new
sunroof can contribute enough energy to allow the vehicle to travel up to an
additional 14 km in electric-only mode on a sunny, summer day.
Veridian has a number of hybrid vehicles from GM and Ford in its green
fleet and is investigating retrofits of these vehicles as well as optimizing
the use of ultra low sulfur diesel in its truck fleet. Veridian is presently
taking delivery of 3 Saturn Vue Green Line hybrids. Work on the vehicle to
Grid interface (V2G), which may include emergency home generation and grid
support, will be the next phase of the project.
The plug-in hybrid solar electric vehicle project is being supported in
part by the LDC (Local Distribution Company) Tomorrow Fund, a utility industry
fund established to finance research projects that advance innovation in
Ontario's electricity distribution sector.
"Solar and wind renewable energies will be one path to lead us to the
sustainable future this planet desperately needs. These technologies will
fulfill much of the need of our growing societies when combined with energy
storage capacity in the form of large hydro dams connected by the grid from
other provinces, new battery technologies and hydrogen; and smart utility
demand control systems," said Michael Angemeer, President and CEO of Veridian
Corporation. This is our generation's race to the moon and we cannot afford to
fail," he further added.
The vehicle was recently on show at the Green Living Show drawing
interest from Premier McGuinty, and many of the Ministers on hand to kick off
the Green Show.
