MONTREAL, Sept. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Two women recruited at Her Majesty's
Canadian Ship (HMCS) DONNACONA in 1980 will go through a change of Command for
the very same unit this Sunday, 7 September 2008 at 10 a.m. in St-Henri under
the supervision of Naval Reserve Commodore Jennifer Bennett.
Twenty-eight years after completing the same Summer Youth Employment
Program here in Montreal, the two women meet again. Commander Kimberley Kubeck
will take over command of the new ship from Lieutenant-commander Sandra
Dethier during a formal ceremony. Awards will also be presented by Commodore
Bennett during the parade and a light lunch will be served to honour the
After governing the ship for four years, Lieutenant-commander Dethier
leaves her station to a woman with which she shares her naval origins. Having
started "in the ranks", they both showed leadership early in their career and
were commissionned as Naval control of Shipping officers.
Despite some similarities, they travelled different roads.
Lieutenant-commander Dethier managed to juggle both military and civilian
careers as a reservist and senior executive for firms such as CAE and Hewitt.
She spent most of her career in the Montreal area.
Commander Kubeck was assigned to numerous important positions and
operational deployments in the Canadian Forces. She commanded Toronto's naval
reserve division HMCS York from 2002 to 2004. Her second command at DONNACONA
presents a new challenge which she gladly takes up.
With a crew of approximately 200 sailors and a top of the line energy
efficient building, Commander Kubeck has all the tools necessary to keep up
HMCS DONNACONA's excellent naval tradition which started in 1923.
