Federal/Provincial Infrastructure Investments Helping to Re-build the Economy and Postsecondary Institutions

TORONTO, May 25 /CNW/ - College and college/university students applaud
both the Harper and McGuinty governments for recognizing and now delivering
much needed infrastructure funds to Ontario's colleges and universities, says
the College Student Alliance (CSA).
"Today's announcement of over $1 billion for college and university
infrastructure projects is definitely a welcomed one," says Justin Fox,
President of the College Student Alliance. "Students have been advocating both
the federal and provincial government to recognize the capacity issues being
felt by our institutions and campuses and our aging infrastructure, buildings,
classrooms and labs."
Industry Minister, Tony Clement and Ontario Training, Colleges and
Universities Minister, John Milloy, announced Ontario's portion of the
Knowledge Infrastructure Program and its first phase of infrastructure
investments for the province. This program is designed to provide short-term
stimulus for the economy and boost Canada's capacity for research and skills
training in the long term. Over the next two years, Ontario's colleges and
universities will receive $1.476 billion, including $587 million from the
federal government, $641.2 million from the province and $248.1 million from
other funding sources.
"Students are pleased that both levels of government are working together
to deal with the current economic crisis," adds Fox. "Knowing that today's
investment will provide tomorrow's students with the ability to utilize their
knowledge and skills to lead Ontario and Canada to economic competitiveness
and future prosperity."

The College Student Alliance (CSA) is an advocacy and services
organization, which has been proudly serving Ontario's college and
college/university students since 1975. The CSA currently represents 16
colleges and 23 student councils with over 110,000 full-time student members
throughout the province.
