FCM's Green Municipal Fund Commits $350,000 to the City of Ottawa for the Development of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan

OTTAWA, May 8 /CNW Telbec/ - FCM Green Municipal Fund Senior Manager
Andrew Cowan, representing the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM),
and the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today
a $350,000 Green Municipal Fund grant to help the City of Ottawa prepare an
Integrated Community Sustainability Plan in partnership with the City of
Gatineau and with the National Capital Commission.
"FCM's Green Municipal Fund offers a range of resources and services that
specifically address the sustainable community development needs of municipal
governments," said FCM Green Municipal Fund Senior Manager Andrew Cowan,
representing FCM. "The financing and knowledge provided by the Fund supports
the development of communities that are more environmentally, socially and
economically sustainable."
"Our government is assisting municipalities across the country in
achieving their goal of a cleaner and healthier environment for Canadians
through the Green Municipal Fund," said Minister Raitt. "Today's announcement
is another example of how the Government of Canada - in partnership with the
FCM - is helping the National Capital Region build a greener future for our
citizens."
"The Choosing our Future initiative will review the National Capital
Region's environmental, economic and social systems in light of its municipal
service areas and governance structures to help us develop a long-term,
efficient and cost-effective approach to dealing with sustainability issues,"
said Acting Ottawa Mayor Michel Bellemare.
"We want to protect the natural environment. We want to create
sustainable neighborhoods that each have a sense of community. We want to
develop sound infrastructure by means such as sustainable transportation as
well as good water, rainwater and waste management. We want to achieve even
better management of energy resources. And we want to integrate the
sustainable community approach to the decision-making process", said Acting
Mayor Bellemare.
"Fulfilling these goals will not be easy. But the social, economic and
environmental benefits will be great for every citizen of the National Capital
Region," said Acting Mayor Bellemare.

The Green Municipal Fund is an endowment financed by the Government of
Canada and managed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The Fund
supports partnerships and leveraging of both public and private sector funding
to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate
protection.

FCM has been the national voice of municipal governments since 1901. It
fosters sustainable communities enjoying a high quality of life by promoting
strong, effective, and accountable municipal government.
