WHISTLER, BC, June 7 /CNW Telbec/ - The following statement was released
today by Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) President Jean Perrault,
Mayor of Sherbrooke, Que., following the speech to FCM delegates by the Leader
of the Official Opposition Michael Ignatieff:
"I want to thank Mr. Ignatieff for coming to Whistler and delivering a
message of partnership and respect to Canada's cities and communities.
Today he told our members that Canada can build a better quality of life
and a stronger economy if federal, provincial and municipal governments work
together as "equal partners". We strongly agree.
We were pleased to hear Mr. Ignatieff's commitment to a national housing
strategy. We must coordinate efforts between governments and put investments
on a long-term track if we're going to solve homelessness and provide the
affordable housing Canadians need.
Mr. Ignatieff also echoed our concerns about the state of rural Canada
and underscored the need for a vision for rural communities and a stronger
rural voice in Ottawa.
Today Mr. Ignatieff began a dialogue with municipalities about the
country's growing fiscal challenges and committed to not downloading deficits
on to cities and communities.
He also said that there had to be a better distribution of fiscal
resources to ensure that municipal governments had the tools to meet their
These are critical commitments and we applaud him.
FCM looks forward to working with all federal parties protect and expand
essential investments in cities and communities and build the physical
foundations of a more sustainable and prosperous country."
