OTTAWA, Feb. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - The following statement was made today by
Winnipeg City Councillor Gord Steeves, President of the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities (FCM), in response to the address delivered by Gilles Duceppe,
leader of the Bloc Québécois, to delegates at the FCM Sustainable Communities
Conference in Ottawa.
"It's not the first time Mr. Duceppe and his party are putting forth
policies that are take into account the needs of our cities and communities,
and the challenges they face.
"Mr. Duceppe has committed today to making sure these needs are debated
in the next election campaign - a pledge we are glad to hear.
"We are also happy to hear his clear commitment to promote increased
investment in the repair of our obsolete infrastructure and in affordable
housing. Mr. Duceppe recognizes - as do we - that upgrading our cities'
physical foundations is not enough: investment in our communities' human
foundations is also needed.
"Another point on which Mr. Duceppe and the FCM are in agreement is the
fundamental role our cities play in safeguarding the environment. His
commitment to public transport reflects one of the Federation's priorities:
mass transit as an essential component of sustainable development.
"We are relying on Mr. Duceppe to ensure that these questions, which are
of fundamental importance to our cities and their residents, are central
issues in the various debates held during the next election campaign."
