FCM applauds Stéphane Dion's commitment to make the gas-tax transfer permanent and invest the federal surplus in cities and communities

OTTAWA, Feb. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - The following statement was released today
by the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Winnipeg
Councillor Gord Steeves, in response to the announcement this morning by the
Hon. Stéphane Dion, Leader of the Opposition, to delegates at FCM's
Sustainable Communities Conference in Ottawa.
"The message from Mr. Dion to Canadians today is as simple as it is
powerful: 'Our cities and communities matter,' and we applaud him.
This may be one of the most significant federal policy announcements of
the last decade. It is bold and it is visionary, with the potential to change
the face of our country.
By making the gas-tax transfer permanent and investing the federal
surplus into our cities and communities, Mr. Dion recognizes their role as
engines of our economy. He recognizes their role as stewards of the
environment. And he recognizes that the property tax is inadequate to meet the
growing needs, challenges and opportunities they face. Most important, he
recognizes the need for federal leadership and commitment in order to meet
those challenges and deliver on the opportunities.
Investing in infrastructure is about more than patching potholes. It is
about building vibrant cities and communities with a high quality of life. It
is about economic competitiveness and clean air and water. It is about active,
dynamic communities that help secure a Canadian brand world-wide. Mr. Dion
recognizes this."
