MISSISSAUGA, Sept. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - In response to today's release of the
Ontario Liberal Party's Rural election platform, Ontario's dairy and poultry
farm leaders would like to express their gratitude to Ontario Premier McGuinty

Leader Howard Hampton for their past and continued support for dairy and
The release of the Liberal Party's Rural Election Platform is the third
piece of the puzzle for FarmGate5 as all three Ontario political parties have
now expressed their support for supply management as part of their 2007
"We would like to thank Ontario's political leaders for recognizing the
important contribution of our province's dairy and poultry industries," said
Carolynne Griffith, spokesperson for FarmGate5 and Chair of Egg Farmers of
Ontario. "Only with their continued support can we ensure that Ontario's
consumers continue to have access to an affordable and secure, made-in-Canada
food supply that respects our high sanitation and health standards."
Dairy and poultry farmers are able to receive a fair price from the
marketplace, without relying on taxpayer subsidies, all the while eliminating
major fluctuations in prices for consumers and farmers alike.
Ontario's agri-food industry is the second largest contributor to the
economy following the Auto sector. The province's 7,138 dairy and poultry
farms contribute account for $2.5 billion in annual farm cash receipts and $5
billion retail value of goods produced and support, support over 314
processing plants and a total of 57,950 related jobs.
The Ontario Liberal Party included support for supply management in its
rural Ontario election platform titled The Ontario Liberal Plan for Improving
Quality of Life in Rural Ontario, 2007 which was released earlier today.
The Ontario NDP Party included support for supply management in its Grow
Ontario political platform released in July, 2007.
And FarmGate5 is also pleased that Ontario PC Party leader John Tory has
stated his support for supply management both in published media articles and
in his public statements.
FarmGate5 was founded by Ontario's dairy and poultry farmers who feel
strongly that Canada's government must continue to work to support a balanced
trade position at the World Trade Organization. It brings together all people
and organizations that believe in a strong agricultural sector and a
prosperous food industry in Ontario. FarmGate5 is supported by Dairy Farmers
of Ontario, Chicken Farmers of Ontario, Egg Farmers of Ontario, Turkey Farmers
of Ontario and Ontario Broiler Hatching Egg & Chick Commission. It has the
support of many MPs, MPPs, numerous other farm organizations including the OFA
and CFFO, plus thousands of individuals across Ontario.
