Mr. René Proulx, Executive vice-president and general manager of Exceldor,
announced the acquisition of Grenville Poultry which confirms Exceldor's
leadership in the marketing of fresh poultry in Canada.
Grenville Poultry employs about 250 people at its Grenville facility,
located in the Laurentides region, where some 400,000 chickens are processed
on a weekly basis. This important transaction allows Exceldor to increase its
production by 40 %, which will contribute to improve its competitive position
on the Quebec and Canadian markets while maintaining, for all its products,
the highest quality standards.
Furthermore, the acquisition of Grenville Poultry allows Exceldor to
consider new perspectives in the study of the consolidation of its operations
with the objective to ensure not only the viability of the organisation but
also its long-term development.
"The future of the agri-food industry in Quebec, clarified Mr. Proulx,
forces us to show more creativity and a stronger administrative rigour in
order to become even more competitive and therefore resist more effectively to
threats we are facing."
Mr. Proulx concluded by stating: "The recent resumption of the
negotiations, led by the WTO (World Trade Organization), in which Canada puts
all efforts to protect its supply management system, in tandem with the price
increase of the corn supply in the United States, force the poultry industry
to reduce its production costs and to innovate in the processes which it uses.

of the members of the ``Commission sur l'avenir de l'agriculture et de
l'agroalimentaire québécois (CAAAQ)``, Mr. Yvon Vallières, Quebec's Minister
of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, spoke about challenges that emerge in our
sector by stating: ".... the episodes of short-term crisis hides heavy
long-term tendencies such as the ceiling of the agricultural prices, cost
increases and the rise of competition".
