Evolution of Holy Name of Mary

Ensuring the future of Catholic, all-girls schooling in Ontario

MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 1 /CNW/ - After much consideration, the Felician
Sisters of St. Francis of Canada have decided to withdraw Holy Name of Mary
Secondary School from its current lease arrangement with the publicly funded
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. This will not affect the
upcoming, 2007-2008 school year.
Effective September 2008, this all girls' school will re-launch as an
independent, not-for-profit institute. Supported by St. Michael's College
School, it will be the first of its kind in Ontario since Catholic high
schools received full funding in the mid 1980's.
The new Holy Name of Mary College School will continue to fulfill the
commitment of the Felician Sisters, which began over 40 years ago when they
built Holy Name of Mary. It was the first all girls' Catholic school in
Dufferin-Peel.
Although the Sisters are happy to continue the mission of providing
quality Catholic education for girls through Holy Name of Mary, they
understand that it will also be a difficult time of transition for many in the
coming year. However, they are confident that this is a positive decision for
the local Catholic community.
