ETFO Donation Supports Education Focus of Jean Augustine Chair

TORONTO, Aug. 13 /CNW/ - The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) today acknowledged its support of the 'Jean Augustine Chair in
Education in the New Urban Environment' by presenting a cheque for $100,000 to
York University in a special ceremony at the ETFO annual meeting in Toronto.
Accepting the donation on behalf of York University were Alice Pitt,
Dean, Faculty of Education and Jean Augustine, Ontario's Fairness
Commissioner.
Named after Ms. Augustine, the first black woman elected to Canadian
Parliament, The Chair will study social justice and equity issues in Canadian
cities that shape student academic success. It will also contribute to
research and activities involving urban communities in areas such as education
policy and practice.
"Ontario's elementary teachers are honoured to be part of such an
important initiative which will benefit student learning not only in Ontario
but throughout Canada," said ETFO President David Clegg.
Clegg added that ETFO is pleased that the Chair will be involved in the
area of teacher training as well as research.
"Social justice and equity issues such as homelessness, racism, poverty,
and violence increasingly impact the lives and learning of our students,
particularly in urban centres. With a more comprehensive understanding of
these educational challenges, teachers will be better prepared to help all
their students reach their fullest potential," said Clegg.
The ETFO annual meeting continues in Toronto until August 14. For
complete details of meeting hours, daily agenda and resolutions, please visit
our website, www.etfo.ca, and click on the annual meeting link.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is
the largest teacher federation in Canada.
