Second Campaign Emphasizes the Living Consequences of Driving Dangerously
CALGARY, Oct. 29 /CNW/ - Enform, the petroleum industry's commitment to
training and safety, today launched chapter two of their province-wide CHOOSE
TO DRIVE SAFE campaign to educate Alberta's oil and gas industry workers.
"When we launched the original CHOOSE TO DRIVE SAFE campaign, last year,
the reaction from industry and the public was incredible," said Murray
Sunstrum, Vice President of Safety, Enform. "Driving is the single leading
cause of death in the Canadian oil and gas Industry and people were relieved
to see a campaign address this serious issue and reinforce the fact that the
choice to drive safe should be first and foremost for drivers."
Sunstrum, along with special guests Fred Lindsay, Solicitor General and
Minister of Public Safety; Eric Reitsma, Executive Director of Compliance,
Workplace Health and Safety & Employment Standards; Superintendent Bruce Wade,
Edmonton EMS and Harvey DeCock, a former industry driver who is now in a
wheelchair as the result of a driving collision, introduced the second chapter
of the safe driving campaign and stressed the fact that death is not always
perceived as the worst end result.
"The first campaign went beyond drivers and targeted their loved ones and
employers. This second campaign will draw the focus back to the driver
directly," added Sunstrum. "We want our industry workers to drive safe to and
from the work site and remember that the choice to drive safe is ultimately
theirs to make."
In keeping with the 2006 safe driving campaign, Enform will utilize a
variety of mediums to get this crucial message out during its campaign
including advertisements in newspapers, television, radio, billboards and
theatre screens. A full public relations campaign is also being implemented
throughout the five-month initiative to increase exposure and awareness for
this critical issue. In addition, Safety Stand Down Week January 14th - 20th,
2008 will focus on driving as a common hazard in our industry which will help
carry this message further.
The CHOOSE TO DRIVE SAFE campaign is being funded by the oil and gas
industry through the six constituent Associations who own and direct Enform.
