Celebrates Honour with $80,000 in Support to Local Women's and
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 16, 2011 /CNW/ - EMD Serono, a Division of EMD
Inc., Canada, an Affiliate of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has been
recognized as a Greater Toronto Top Employer for 2012, by Mediacorp
Canada Inc., as featured in the Globe and Mail. This is the third year
in a row that EMD Serono has been named a top GTA employer. To honour
this, it has committed $80,000 in support of Halton Women's Place and
Future Possibilities for Kids.
"One of the things that makes our company a great place to work is
having engaged employees," said EMD Canada President Deborah Brown.
"Engaged individuals care on both a personal and professional level,
not just about the quality of their individual work but about how
together we can positively impact others and the communities where we
live and work."
"I'm proud to work for an employer who not only supports those with
unique healthcare needs but also sees the benefit in supporting the
unique social needs of the community," said Mallika Bhaduri, Product
Manager, Endocrinology for EMD Serono. "Engaging employees to find
solutions to unmet needs is what makes this a great place to work."
Managed by Mediacorp Canada Inc., the Greater Toronto Top Employers
award recognizes GTA employers that lead their industries in offering
exceptional places to work. Organizations are selected based on
physical workplace; work and social atmosphere; financial and family
benefits; vacation and time-off; employee communications; performance
management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
Employers are compared to others in their field to determine which
offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
EMD Serono was awarded based on several programs that make it an
excellent place to work. For example, it provides parental leave top-up
payments for employees who are new birth or adoptive parents; it
supports employees' continuous career development by covering the full
cost of course tuition, and it offers a wellness subsidy for employees
and their families alike.
EMD Serono is continuing a tradition started in 2009, when it received
its first Top GTA Employer award. That year, it committed $100,000 to
The Mississauga Food Bank, Halton Learning Centre and Halton Women's
Place. With its second award in 2010, it launched the Employee Matching
Program, which matches corporate funds to individual employee
fundraising and volunteer efforts. This year, it is launching the
Employees Making a Difference program, which supports Halton Women's
Place and Future Possibilities for Kids with approximately $80,000 in
funds tied to specific initiatives, including:
A Community Outreach Counselor for Halton Women's Place. Funded by EMD Serono, the counselor's role is to educate primary and
secondary school children on what they can do to help stop the cycle of
Mentorship Programs to Develop Future 'Possibilitarians' with Future
Possibilities for Kids: EMD Serono will provide financial and employee resources to support
individual and group mentorship programs ('Ready, Set, Goal' and
'Ready, Set, Action') designed to help kids from 8 to 12 years of age
set and accomplish goals to make the world a better place.
EMD Serono employees will also assist with related programs that support
these two main initiatives, such as volunteering to support a child's
community project for a day and delivering specialty knowledge
workshops to children for a day. It will also continue its
furniture-building program to support former residents of Halton
Women's Place with resettling in the community.
"The positive impact of EMD's commitment to the women and children we
support has grown each year," said Diane Beaulieu, Executive Director
of Halton Women's Place. "From an initial donation to support programs
at the shelter, to support for families when they move back into the
community and now a program to help end the cycle of abuse. That's true
"EMD and Future Possibilities for Kids share a passion for 'possibility
thinking'. We are delighted that EMD will be supporting our mission to
inspire and empower kids to transform themselves and their
communities," said Lianne Picot, Executive Director of Future
Possibilities for Kids. "We look forward to EMD employees getting
involved as volunteers to support our 'Future Possibilitarians' in
developing leadership skills and accomplishing their goals."
About the Greater Toronto's Top Employer Award
Now in its seventh year, Greater Toronto's Top Employers is an annual
competition organized by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers
project. This special designation recognizes the employers in the GTA
that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. The
project is unique in that it's the only editorially based
competitionrecognizing outstanding workplaces specifically in the GTA.
Employers apply for the Greater Toronto's Top Employers competition
through the Canada's Top 100 Employers application process. For this
year's national competition, Medicacorp editors examined the
recruitment histories of over 75,000 employers across Canada that it
tracks for its popular job search site, Eluta.ca. From this initial group, Mediacorp invited 10,000 of the
fastest-growing employers to apply, plus another 2,500 companies and
organizations in industries its editors wanted to examine more closely.
Employers completed an extensive application process that included a
detailed review of their operations and HR practices. Over 2,750
employers started this year's application process.
