EllisDon Site Chosen for Construction Sector Council's Annual Forecast

MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 4 /CNW/ - EllisDon was chosen to host The
Construction Sector Council's (CSC) fourth annual forecast of labour market
trends, called "Construction Looking Forward." The Press Conference was held
at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga where EllisDon is currently
constructing the hospital's west wing and cardiac services expansion.
The Trillium project is typical of the type of infrastructure expansion
that's fuelling the nationwide demand on the construction industry. This
demand will generate a need for over 250,000 skilled trade workers over the
next 8 years.
"I'd call it a perfect storm," said Robert Blakely, Labour Co-Chair of
the Construction Sector Council. "Major infrastructure projects right across
Canada including strong government-led building of hospitals and schools as
well as industrial and engineering projects are boosting the economy, but
creating a real challenge for our labour force."
The CSC's report finds that that an unprecedented 42,000 new workers were
hired in 2007 to meet increased construction activity. Another 94,000 skilled
workers wil be needed over the next 8 years to keep pace with new projects,
and an additional 162,000 workers are required to replace retiring baby
boomers.
"The bottom line is, you can't build quality complexes like (Trillium's
expansion) without skilled labour," said Tim Smith, Vice President at
EllisDon. "It's not a job you perceive doing for 30 years, but the trade-off
is, you're in an outside environment, your anxieties are probably less and you
can see the accomplishments. (Also), wages are good."
EllisDon is currently involved in over 25 infrastructure and industrial
projects across Canada. And there are many more planned projects underway
ultimately exceeding available skilled resources. This is particularly
challenging in western Canada.
Attracting and retaining skilled labour is not an easy task and EllisDon
is up for the challenge. Having recently been named the No. 1 employer in
Canada by Hewitt's 50 Best Employers, EllisDon is not about to rest on its
laurels. Says Janine Szczepanowski, EllisDon's Vice President of Leadership
and Entrepreneurial Development: "Being effective in recruiting takes
creativity, leveraging multiple recruitment sources at the same time and
ensuring that you have a strong employee-focused culture. EllisDon has been
promoting the industry, the trades and our company at the high school level
and has broken ground in bringing in temporary foreign workers in areas across
the country in our efforts to meet not only today's demands but the demands of
the future."
