MISSISSAUGA, ON, Dec. 28 /CNW/ - EllisDon has been named the number one
employer in Canada by Hewitt's 50 Best Employers. Having been selected as one
of Canada's 50 Best Employers for the past 7 consecutive years, this
outstanding recognition marks the company's first top-place finish. Hewitt's
study of the 50 Best Employers in Canada for 2008 will appear in the January
issue of The Globe and Mail's Report on Business magazine. Survey responses
from more than 100,000 Canadian employees at 115 organizations determined this
EllisDon and its employees are thrilled to receive top ranking and
attribute this success to a work environment that fosters high employee
engagement. Based on Hewitt's study, engagement is not about creating "happy"
or "loyal" employees, but about measuring the state of emotional and
intellectual involvement or commitment of the workforce.
"EllisDon has created and nurtured a culture that is right for them,"
says Neil Crawford, who heads the Hewitt study. "Light on processes and
structure, but heavy on entrepreneurship...to learn by doing."
"Being recognized as the top employer in a year which we have had
unprecedented growth is an outstanding achievement," says Janine
Szczepanowski, Vice President of Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development at
EllisDon. "Each and every person at EllisDon should feel proud of this
achievement, whether you joined us last week and made the decision that we are
the company for you or you have been with us for years and have continually
strived to make this a better company. We all help to create a company where
choice and opportunity empower our employees to do great things."
For the 2008 study, Hewitt conducted special research to better
understand the dynamics of an increasingly diverse workforce and how employers
are responding to the challenge of managing people in this environment. Using
international recruiters to hire foreign workers with the right skills is just
one way that EllisDon works to build workplace diversity. "We need to broaden
our perspective to take advantage of the work force that's already here in
Canada, but also go outside the country", states Geoff Smith, EllisDon's
President and CEO.
Geoff will be speaking directly to this challenge, as well the other key
measures that EllisDon undertakes to ensure consistently high employee
engagement and diversity when he participates as a panelist at the Canadian
Institute's 8th Annual "Winning HR Practices of the Best Employers in Canada"
conference, taking place in April 2008.
