Toronto Waldorf School joins with OISE to discuss media in education
THORNHILL, ON, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - Toronto Waldorf School and University of
Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education welcome Dr. Lowell Monke,
assistant professor at Wittenburg University in Ohio, as he presents his
research on the potential damage of electronic media in elementary school
classrooms. Thursday, October 18 from 7:30 - 9pm Dr. Monke will speak directly
to the concerns of parents and the interests of teachers, offering his vision
of what a future curriculum could be like in order to facilitate education
that results in balanced, healthy children and enhanced learning. Admission to
the talk is $7 per person or $10 per couple, at the door. All are welcome.
Conference on adolescents and "efficiency education" this weekend
Also visiting the Toronto Waldorf School, Friday evening and Saturday
October 12 & 13, is Dr. Douglas Gerwin. Co-Director of the Research Institute
for Waldorf Education. Dr. Gerwin will be discussing more student-friendly
approaches in an increasingly "efficiency-based education" in which
accountability to government agendas overrides appropriate learning
objectives. A panel of experts, including Dr. Jack Miller, Head of the Teacher
Development Centre at OISE/UofT, will join Dr. Gerwin on Saturday morning at
the conference. Many hands-on workshops for parents and teachers are available
for participants to integrate the conference themes into their practical work.
The conference fee is $90 per person for the weekend, including healthy
Toronto Waldorf School, founded in 1968, is Canada's oldest and largest
