PR firm becomes an environmental leader with Planetair's help
TORONTO, MONTREAL, VANCOUVER, June 11 /CNW Telbec/ - Edelman Canada is
pleased to announce that we have taken a bold step towards reducing our
environmental footprint with all three Edelman Canada offices (Montreal,
Toronto and Vancouver), and have become certified as carbon neutral through a
partnership with Planetair.
"Edelman is about insights, engagement and leadership. We understand how
important it is for every company to do its part in reducing its impact on the
environment and contribute to fighting climate change. Our decision to reduce
and offset our carbon emissions was, therefore, a logical business decision.
Quite simply, it's practicing what we counsel and recommend to our clients,"
said Freda Colbourne, Chief Executive Officer of Edelman Canada. "This is only
a first step. We are continuing to work on action plans to further reduce our
carbon emissions over the next year," added Colbourne.
A formal audit of the Edelman Canada offices was done by Planetair, a
not-for-profit service dedicated to raising awareness of individuals,
corporations and institutions about how their daily activities impact our
global climate. Planetair fosters behavioural changes required to reduce
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and issues calls to action to offset GHG
emissions that cannot be effectively reduced.
"We are proud to have worked with Edelman to help them become carbon
neutral and congratulate them on this important accomplishment. Edelman's
decision shows that offsetting is part of the solution to global warming, and
that this is gaining momentum in Canada. Without a doubt, the company's
decision to select high quality Gold Standard certified offsets makes it a
leader in the market and will hopefully lead others to follow suit," noted
Karel Mayrand, Executive Director of Planetair.
Becoming carbon neutral was an initiative lead by Edelman Canada's
National CSR and Sustainability practice, headed by William L. George. By
encouraging all employees to adopt more environmentally-conscious habits
(reducing consumption of energy and using alternative forms of transportation)
and by purchasing carbon offsets from Planetair, Edelman was able to
compensate for 555.3 tons of carbon emissions, which represents 4.6 tons
per employee. The bulk of these emissions (82%) were due to traveling
(commuting and business travel), followed by infrastructure (14%) and waste
and paper (4%). Over the next year, Edelman employees will continue to adopt
new behaviours and environmentally-friendly practices in attempts to purchase
fewer carbon offsets in 2009.
Planetair is the first Canadian provider of Gold Standard carbon offsets,
the most stringent label currently available. Gold Standard carbon credits are
the highest quality carbon credits currently available for voluntary offsets,
and the projects Planetair funds are the most premium projects on the market.
The process requires that renewable energy and energy efficiency projects also
lead to sustainable development for the local community (such as increased
standards of living, knowledge transfer and job creation).
Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at Edelman
