TORONTO, Jan. 27 /CNW/ - E1 Entertainment Canada (E1) today announced an
increase of 656% over last year's Canadian box office gross sales. In 2008,
E1's domestic box office was $27,769,170 versus $3,672,910 in 2007, a clear
reflection of the company's aggressive growth plan in Canada and an indication
of E1 Entertainment Canada's ascent to being one of the country's major film

profitability is paying dividends. The past year's success positions E1 for
further growth in 2009 and strengthens our role as one of the leading Canadian

E1's upcoming theatrical slate includes highly-anticipated Canadian
features from Atom Egoyan (ADORATION) and Vincenzo Natali (SPLICE, starring
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley); NEW MOON, the second film in the hit TWILIGHT
series; Steven Soderbergh's CHE; the Nicolas Cage action-thriller KNOWING; MR.
NOBODY starring Jared Leto, Diane Kruger and Sarah Polley; and Terry Gilliam's
THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS featuring an all-star cast including
Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and the late Heath Ledger in his final role.
Yesterday, E1 Entertainment Canada announced a major agreement with
Christal Films Productions for the distribution of all Christal films in
Canada and internationally. E1 also holds the Canadian distribution rights to
a diverse range of titles from Summit Entertainment, IFC, Image Entertainment,
Yari Film Group, Fortissimo Films, Lakeshore Entertainment and Cinetic Media.

2009 E1 releases theatrical include:
November 26, 1956; led by Fidel Castro (Demian Bichir), a band of 80
rebels sails to Cuba. Among these young rebels is Argentine physician,
Marxist, soldier, Ernesto "Che" Guevara (Benicio Del Toro). Nation-less,
strapped for resources and fueled only by determination, the group engages in
swift, bloody battle to free the Cuban people from the corrupt dictatorship of
Fulgencio Batista. Che and his soldiers wrestle the nation's resources and
affection from Batista's grasp. Though considered a hero by some, Che becomes
a hugely controversial figure. At the height of his fame and power, he
disappears. Entering South America incognito, Che recruits another band of
guerilla fighters in the harsh Bolivian jungles. They embark upon a mission to
spark revolution throughout Latin America.
PUSH (February 6)
An exciting action-thriller set in the modern-day world of psychic
espionage. Nick (Chris Evans) and Cassie (Dakota Fanning) are among a group of
unique individuals who have inherited and developed special psychic abilities
originating from human experiments conducted by the Nazis during World War II.
They find themselves on the run from Carver (Djimon Hounsou) and his troops,
part of a clandestine government agency determined to hunt them down to
harness their powers for evil.
KNOWING (March 20)
An action-thriller of global proportions, KNOWING centers on a professor
(Nicolas Cage) who stumbles on terrifying predictions of imminent disaster and
sets out to prevent them from coming true. Meanwhile, his young son is
shadowed by mysterious strangers whose identities hold the key to the film's
ADORATION (May 8)
Sabine (Arsinée Khanjian), a high school French teacher, gives her class
a translation exercise based on a real news story about a terrorist who plants
a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend. The assignment has a
profound effect on one student, Simon (Devon Bostick), who lives with his
uncle (Scott Speedman). In the course of translating, Simon re-imagines that
the news item is his own family's story, with the terrorist standing in for
his father. Years ago, Simon's father (Noam Jenkins) crashed the family car,
killing both himself and his wife (Rachel Blanchard), making Simon an orphan.
Simon has always feared that the accident was intentional.
BANDSLAM (July 31)
When gifted singer-songwriter Charlotte Banksasks invites new kid in town
Will Burton to manage her fledgling rock band, she appears to have just one
goal in mind: go head-to-head against her egotistical musician ex-boyfriend at
the biggest event of the year, a battle of the bands. Against all odds, their
band develops a sound all its own with a real shot at success in the contest.
When disaster strikes, it's time for the band to make a choice: Do they admit
defeat, or face the music and stand up for what they believe in? Starring
Vanessa Hudgens, Lisa Kudrow and David Bowie.
SORORITY ROW (October 2)
When five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their
sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and
never speak of it again so they can get on with their lives. This proves
easier said than done when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the
five of them and anyone who knows their secret.
ASTRO BOY (October 23)
Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with
incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist. Powered by positive "blue"
energy, Astro Boy is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable
speed and the ability to fly. Embarking on a journey in search of acceptance,
Astro Boy learns the joys and emotions of being human, and gains the strength
to embrace his destiny. Ultimately learning his friends and family are in
danger, Astro Boy marshals his awesome super powers and returns to Metro City
in a valiant effort to save everything he cares about and to understand what
it takes to be a hero. Featuring the voices of Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage,
Eugene Levy, Nathan Lane, and Donald Sutherland.
MR. NOBODY (FALL)
Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto) leads an ordinary existence beside his wife
Elise (Sarah Polley) and their 3 children until the day when reality skids and
he wakes up as an old man in the year 2092. At 120, Mr. Nobody is both the
oldest man in the world and the last mortal of a new mankind where nobody
dies. But that doesn't seem to interest or bother him very much. The only
questions that preoccupy him in the present are whether he lived the right
life for himself, loved the woman he was supposed to love, and had the
children he was meant to have. Now his purpose is to find the right answers. A
France-Canada co-production directed by Jaco Van Dormel (TOTO THE HERO) and
produced by Christian Larouche of Christal Productions.

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS (FALL)
