Drug swallower's stay costly

TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - A Scarborough man is lucky to be alive after
spending three weeks in police custody with pellets of cocaine trapped in his
body. Drug courier Hatim GULAMHUSEIN arrived at Toronto Lester B. Pearson
International Airport on April 7th after a trip to Buenos Aries. He was
interdicted by officers with the CANADA BORDER SERVICES AGENCY as drug
courier, and while in CBSA custody, produced eleven plastic pellets containing
approximately 13 grams of cocaine each. GULAMHUSEIN was arrested and turned
over to members of the RCMP's Toronto Airport Detachment, who for the next
three weeks kept a 24 hour bed pan vigil, and made numerous trips to the
hospital.
During the course of Mr.GULAMHUSEIN's marathon stay, the RCMP made no
less than 6 trips to Etobicoke General Hospital where GULAMHUSEIN was examined
by a myriad of doctors and technicians. While most Ontarians have to wait
months to receive a CT scan, Mr. GULAMHUSEIN received two, in addition to
numerous x-rays, and free prescription drugs. The cost the health care system
is estimated at several thousand dollars. The ordeal could have been shortened
had Mr. GULAMHUSEIN not declined further medical intervention to remove 3 of
the pellets with had become lodged in his stomach. GULAMHUSEIN swallowed a
total of 76 pellets containing approximately a kilogram of cocaine, with an
estimated value of $100,000.
"This was a very unusual and costly case," said RCMP Inspector Dean
Dickson, Officer in charge of the Toronto Airport Detachment. "Everyday that
those pellets remained in Mr. GULAMHUSEIN's body increased the chance of their
compromise, the result of which would have been certain death. Mr. GULAMHUSEIN
has cost the Canadian taxpayer a lot of money and he is lucky his decision did
not cost him his life."
Mr. GULAMHUSEIN remains in custody and will appear in Brampton Provincial
Court on April 29th, 2009.
