Driefontein Gold Mine to Resume Production

JOHANNESBURG, June 23 /CNW/ - Gold Fields Limited (Gold Fields) (JSE,
NYSE, NASDAQ Dubai: GFI) confirms that its Driefontein Gold Mine is expected
to resume full production with the start of the afternoon shift today. This
follows the conclusion of the initial onsite investigation by mine management
and the Safety Inspectorate of the Department of Minerals and Resources.
The mine was closed after five employees were trapped underground after a
fall of ground accident caused by a seismic event that measured 3.5 on the
Richter scale at approximately 10am on Saturday morning, 20 June 2009.
Two of the five trapped employees regrettably lost their lives as a
result of injuries sustained during the accident. Following a massive rescue
operation in which approximately 200 rescue workers participated, the
remaining three miners were rescued by early Saturday evening. The rescued
miners are in a stable condition and recovering in hospital.
Nick Holland, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Fields, said: "We are
deeply saddened by this tragic accident. We have expressed our deepest
condolences to the families of the deceased and we are providing them with all
the support possible."
Holland adds: "This accident strengthens our resolve not to mine if we
cannot mine safely. We remain focused on eliminating all serious accidents on
our mines."
