OTTAWA, July 31 /CNW/ - Road to Excellence (RTE) announced today the
appointment of Dr. Jon Kolb as Manager, Sport Science and Medicine. The hiring
of Dr. Kolb supports the Road to Excellence technical team as it assists
Canada's summer National Sport Organizations in their quest for podium success
at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Dr. Kolb
begins his employment with RTE on August 1, 2008.
"Road to Excellence is thrilled to have Jon as part of the RTE team,"
said Alex Baumann, Executive Director of Road to Excellence and double Olympic
gold medallist in swimming. "Jon brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and
expertise to the Canada's high performance sport system that will undoubtedly
fulfill Road to Excellence goal of establishing a world class sport science
and medical program for Canada's targeted summer sports."
As RTE's new Manager, Sport Science/Sport Medicine, Dr. Kolb will be
responsible for providing expertise, assistance and leadership to targeted
Olympic and Paralympic summer sports in the creation, implementation and
assessment of an integrated sport science and medicine program. Dr. Kolb will
also assist Road to Excellence in establishing comprehensive service contracts
between Canadian Sport Centres (CSCs), the provider of key medical and sport
science services for Canada's high performance athletes, and the National
Sport Organizations (NSOs).
In today's increasingly competitive and highly technological sporting
world, an effective Integrated Support Team (IST) is considered crucial for
Canadian athletes to consistently achieve podium performances. IST's typically
include a physiologist, sport psychologist, biomechanist/performance
technologist, nutritionist, physical therapists/athletic therapist, and a
physician, and perhaps other specialists. The IST works regularly with the
coaches and athletes to ensure that athletes receive world-class care and
support for their training, recovery and competition programs.
Dr. Kolb holds a PhD in Physiology from the German Sport University in
Cologne and was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the
University of Calgary. He was the National Team Coach for the Canadian
Gymnastics Federation from 1983 to 1993 and during that time maintained
several international coaching assignments. Dr. Kolb will move from his
current residence of Calgary, AB to Ottawa where the Road to Excellence office
"I am very excited about this opportunity to be a member of the Road to
Excellence team" says Dr. Kolb. "This is a very exciting time for Canadian
high performance sport and I look forward to contributing to the achievement
of the performance goals that have been established for the upcoming summer
Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing and London. I am confident that my
extensive background and experiences in sport will help me deliver an
effective integrated sport science support system for Canada's targeted summer
Olympic and Paralympic sports."
