Dr. David Suzuki to address sold-out crowd of University of Toronto Students



    The University of Toronto Students' Union is hosting world famous award-
    winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster

    TORONTO, Jan. 17 /CNW/ - University of Toronto Students' Union, Local 98
of the Canadian Federation of Students, along with coalition partners - the U
of T Environmental Resource Network (UTERN), United Steelworkers Local 1998,
CUPE 3902, the Good Ideas Fund at Hart House and the Graduate Students' Union
- are hosting a lecture by Dr. Suzuki entitled "Biosphere Crisis: How Did We
Get Here and Where Are We Going?" David T. Suzuki PhD, co-founder of the David
Suzuki Foundation, is an award-winning scientist, environmentalist and
broadcaster. The author of 43 books, David Suzuki is recognized as a world
leader in sustainable ecology.
    Clayton Thomas-Muller, of the Mathais Colomb Cree Nation (Pukatawagon) in
Northern Manitoba, Tar Sands Campaign Organizer for the Indigenous
Environmental Network, is providing a talk entitled "Global Triple Crisis:
building an inclusive movement for justice". Clayton has been on the front
lines of stopping industrial society's assault on Indigenous Peoples lands. He
has worked across Canada, Alaska and the lower 48 states with grassroots
indigenous communities to defend their Inherit, Treaty and environmental
rights against unsustainable energy policies and transnational energy
corporations.
    Students across the country, through the Canadian Federation of Students,
have been actively working to bring environmental justice issues to the
forefront of the country's agenda. The campaign has included participation and
organizing around the International Day of Action on Climate Change,
generating awareness around the consequences of the Bottled Water Industry,
and an education series including talks by Dr. Suzuki and other prominent
activists.
    There will be a brief press conference before the lecture at which the
media may ask questions to Dr. Suzuki, Mr. Thomas-Muller, and representatives
from the University of Toronto Students' Union.
