Double lung recipient joins the ride to conquer cancer

Two years ago Grant Hagerty could barely climb a flight of stairs, this
weekend he will be climbing the Niagara escarpment on his bike.

TORONTO, June 19 /CNW/ - Less than two years ago Grant Hagerty required
24/7 oxygen support, could barely walk up a flight of stairs and, in his
words, "was at the end of the road. But, thanks to the generosity and courage
of one family, today the road is literally laid out before me." Grant is
speaking in particular of the 225 km of road he is about to undertake on his
bicycle.
Hagerty is joining the Ride to Conquer Cancer, for two purposes:
benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital and raising awareness for organ and
tissue donation.
"Grant is an outstanding man and an inspiring representative for these
important causes. While it's obvious to most people the benefit of transplant
to the recipient what is not always so obvious is the enormous impact that
donation can have to the community as a whole, Grant is a sterling example of
that benefit," said Frank Markel, President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life
Network (TGLN). "After his transplant, Grant returned to living his life to
the fullest and has dedicated himself to helping so many others".
In addition to the ride this weekend and continuing to raise awareness
for organ and tissue donation Grant also volunteers his time with Track-3 a
group that teaches kids with physical and cognitive disabilities to ski and
snowboard.
"Everyday in Ontario people make the decision to talk to their families
about organ and tissue donation. What they are really saying is that what
happens to people in my community, people in Ontario, people who I may never
meet matters," said Hagerty.
"Life is a series of choices and you can choose to make a difference and
you can choose to be part of solution. Through my ride I am trying to make a
difference to the fight against cancer and honour those whose choices made a
difference to me and my family."
Hagerty will begin his journey in Toronto on June 21, pedaling the 225 km
in just two days arriving in Niagara Falls on June 22.
