Doors Open Ontario 2007 Season Begins

TORONTO, April 5 /CNW/ - The sixth season of Doors Open Ontario begins on
April 28 in Guelph, with events continuing through October. During 44 events
this year, communities across the province will open the doors to their
heritage buildings, architectural showpieces and sites of local significance -
all free of charge.
Seven new community events are planned for Doors Open Ontario 2007.
Haldimand County, Hills of Headwaters, Lanark Highlands, Muskoka, North Bay,
Shelburne and Timmins will all be opening their doors for the first time. The
program will also reach across the border for the sixth consecutive year, with
Doors Open Niagara featuring sites in both Ontario and Western New York.
"Through Doors Open Ontario, people have the chance to visit sites that
might be otherwise inaccessible or unknown to them," said The Honourable
Lincoln M. Alexander, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Trust. "These events
provide an opportunity for communities to share their unique heritage
treasures."
This year's Doors Open Ontario events offer a variety of sites to explore
- from a mine headframe built in 1927 (McIntyre Mine headframe, Timmins), to a
newly completed energy-efficient laboratory (Woodward Environmental
Laboratory, Hamilton), to an 1888 church now used as a private residence
(Emanuel Pontes Art Studio, Shelburne). The list also includes commercial
buildings, courthouses, theatres, places of worship, museums, gardens and
natural heritage properties. Many of the participating sites offer special
activities, such as tours, exhibitions and demonstrations. For a complete list
of communities and participating sites, visit www.doorsopenontario.on.ca.
"Doors Open Ontario is an affordable and educational way to discover
Ontario's heritage," said Minister of Culture Caroline Di Cocco. "With a
variety of sites and activities to choose from, it is ideal for families and
individuals planning day-trips or weekend getaways throughout the province."
The free Doors Open Ontario 2007 Guide - featuring a selection of
participating sites - will be distributed in the Ontario edition of The Globe
and Mail on Tuesday, April 10. The guide is also available by calling
1-800-ONTARIO (668-2746).
Doors Open Ontario was launched in 2002 by the Ontario Heritage Trust, an
agency of the Government of Ontario dedicated to identifying, preserving,
protecting and promoting Ontario's heritage for present and future
generations. During last year's program, more than 415,000 visits were made to
1,234 sites in over 200 communities. To date, nearly two million visits have
been made to heritage sites during Doors Open Ontario events.
Sponsors of Doors Open Ontario 2007 include The Globe and Mail, CVRD
Inco, the Ontario Ministry of Culture, the Ontario Tourism Marketing
Partnership Corporation and all the participating communities.
