TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Donna Naylor of Gravenhurst will receive a Fire
Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony
on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize
outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
With her experience as a long-time teacher in various secondary schools,
Naylor did not hesitate when asked by a member of the Ontario fire service to
assist in developing a kitchen fire safety program. Geared to grade 9 and
Grade 10 students, the goals of the program include increasing awareness of
kitchen safety, being able to recognize hazards associated with preventable
cooking fires and gaining knowledge on methods of extinguishing a cooking fire
safely (i.e. putting a lid on a fire in a pot). In helping to develop the
program, Naylor provided insight into her students' learning styles, provided
resources for the kitchen hazard stations so the lessons could take place in
her classroom, helped facilitate an initial focus group of 14 teenagers and
administered two written tests to evaluate students' knowledge of the program.
This year, Naylor will be retiring from Gravenhurst High School. Her
retirement comes after 32 years of teaching.
"As a result of Ms. Naylor's involvement, more than 120 Gravenhurst
secondary students have participated in the kitchen fire safety program," said
Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "With the program in her curriculum, she has
since suggested training on commercial cooking be added as students' first
jobs are often in fast food restaurants. Always enthusiastic in her efforts,
Ms. Naylor's teachings are likely to have lasting effects with her students."
Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
