CALGARY, Sept. 17 /CNW/ - What would you do if the cops threw you in jail
on ridiculous charges?
This week, plenty of Calgary's upstanding citizens will find themselves
on the wrong side of the law when the Canadian Cancer Society presents its
nineteenth annual Jail-N-Bail fundraiser. Each year, the support of the
Calgary Police Department makes Calgary's Jail-N-Bail even more entertaining.
Approximately 30 uniformed, off-duty officers take two days in their cruisers
to arrest jailbirds to do hard time for a good cause.
On September 19 & 20, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, the police will be
"arresting" some of our most prominent citizens and bringing them to our
"jail" in Bow Valley Square. The Chief of Police, Jack Beaton, will also make
a special appearance to arrest one of our unsuspecting criminals on Wednesday
morning. To regain their freedom, the "convicts" must raise their own bail
through pledges, by calling and e-mailing friends and co-workers asking for
donations. Money raised goes towards funding research on all types of cancer,
supporting people in Calgary living with cancer, providing comprehensive
information about cancer, promoting prevention strategies and advocating for
healthy public policy.
To have someone "arrested" or for more information, call the Canadian
Cancer Society Jail-N-Bail hotline at 221-0950 or visit www.cancer.ca.
Jail-N-Bail(R) involves mock arrests of willing and fun-loving
participants who are taken to "jail", where a celebrity "judge" hears humorous
charges friends and co-workers have levelled against them. They are sentenced
to raise pledged "bail" during their one-hour stay.
