Discover Your Ocean Campaign Reaches $5-Million Target: Shaw Charitable Donations Committee Contributes $1.5 Million

SIDNEY, BC, April 20 /CNW/ - The New Marine Centre's Discover Your Ocean
Campaign has reached its $5-million goal thanks to a $1.5-million gift from
the Shaw Charitable Donations Committee. This is the largest single gift to
the fundraising campaign. With news of the Shaw contribution came the
announcement today that the environmental education centre will be named the
'Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.'
Represented at the announcement by Mr. Mark Dickinson, Campaign Co-chairs
Murray and Lynda Farmer applauded the enthusiastic support of the community,
the Canada/BC Infrastructure Fund, the Town of Sidney, and many individuals
and family foundations, including the Shaw Charitable Donations Committee, for
creating a new and unique environmental education centre on Canada's West
Coast.
JR Shaw, Chairman of Shaw Communications, said the Shaw organization is
proud to be contributing to this important ocean discovery centre. "For
generations, Shaw has been committed to making a difference - enriching and
improving the communities that we serve. We are strong supporters of
initiatives for children and families. The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre will be
a place of discovery, wonder and adventure," said Mr. Shaw. "It will showcase
the extraordinary marine life of the ocean that surrounds us. This will be a
place where families can learn about ocean science in the most welcoming and
engaging way."
Up and coming marine biologist, 16-year-old Casey Atkin, thanked Julie
Shaw, CEO of Shaw Family Group and VP of Facilities with Shaw Communications,
who was present at the event. Ms. Atkin stressed the need for everyone to
understand that "99 percent of the life-sustaining space on the oddly-named
planet Earth is actually found in the oceans." She went on to say, "Dr. Bill
Austin inspired my interest in marine science, and the Shaw Ocean Discovery
Centre will do the same for everyone who visits." Ms. Atkin was among the
first to join the team of over 150 volunteers of all ages who will serve as
Oceaneers in the centre.
Peter Lloyd, Board Chair of the New Marine Centre Society, said, "The
generous Shaw donation is the largest single contribution to our campaign.
This contribution was essential and will enable the centre to open on June 20,
2009."
Larry Cross, Mayor of Sidney, thanked all of the donors and volunteers
supporting the project and said, "The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is going to
be an enormous draw to Sidney and Vancouver Island." The Mayor noted that
"having such a quality attraction and education facility in Sidney will help
people appreciate the spectacular inland sea at our front door. The Town of
Sidney is proud to support this project by providing this breathtaking
oceanfront building in cooperation with Marker Developments. "This is a
project that engages the entire community. We are grateful to all the donors
and volunteers," he said.
The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre opens on June 20. Construction crews are
completing the installation of giant aquarium habitats that will soon hold 87
tonnes of seawater and thousands of specimens. More than 150 volunteers,
called Oceaneers, ranging in age from 11 to 80, are being trained to answer
hundreds of questions and guide visitors through the 'immersive' ocean
experience when the centre opens.
