Direct Energy Guarantees Savings With New Electricity Plan

New Alternative to Regulated Rate Offers Relief from Increasing
    Electricity Costs

CALGARY, June 26 /CNW/ - As regulated electricity rates continue to rise
across the province, Direct Energy today announced a new kind of energy plan
that promises savings each and every month.
The one-year Guaranteed Savings Plan offers a variable electricity price
of five per cent below the Regulated Rate Option (RRO) energy charge each and
every month. The RRO energy charge is the default supply rate consumers pay
for electricity if they haven't selected an energy plan from a competitive
retailer.
"Our Guaranteed Savings Plan is designed for customers who are seeking
shelter from skyrocketing rates, but who don't feel a long-term flat price is
the right choice for them," said Tanis Kozak, Vice President and General
Manager of Direct Energy. "As costs in all aspects of our lives continue to
climb, many Albertans have told us they are looking for ways to save money
every month - this product is designed for them."
On average, a typical Albertan household spent more than $700 on
electricity last year. This figure appears set to increase for 2008, however,
as this year's rates continue to climb. July's rates are more than 20 per cent
higher than July 2007 in many parts of the province. Approximately 1 in 4
Albertans have already switched from the regulated electricity rate to a
retail energy contract, and demand for innovative choices continues to grow as
climbing fuel prices continue to drive higher and more volatile energy prices.
Traditionally, retail energy plans offer stable prices for a set period
of time and appeal to consumers who want protection from volatility in the
regulated rate. Direct Energy's Guaranteed Savings Plan is different because
it was created for consumers who are more concerned about savings than price
certainty.
"The great thing about the kind of healthy competition we see in
Alberta's retail energy market is that it drives innovative new choices in
response to consumer demand," said Kozak. "As a result, Albertans have more
choices in the way they purchase energy than most other Canadians."
The Guaranteed Savings Plan is available across Alberta. It can be
purchased on its own, or bundled together with a one-year natural gas
contract. For customers who sign up for the Guaranteed Savings Plan, the price
each month will be calculated based on a five per cent discount from the
regulated rate applicable in their region. Consumers can find out more or sign
up by visiting www.directenergy.com, calling 1-866-374-6299, or talking to a
door-to-door sales agent.
