Leading Energy Retailer Delivers on Promise - "If You Build it, We Will
STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 12 /CNW/ -- Direct Energy, one of the largest
providers of retail energy and related services in North America, announced
that it is now supplying electricity to residential and small business
customers in the Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating service
territories. Since 2004, Direct Energy has been providing innovative electric
and natural gas solutions to more than 2,000 commercial and industrial
customers in Connecticut.
"Entering the Connecticut residential market is an exciting and
significant milestone for Direct Energy and Connecticut residents as
competition empowers consumers to take control over their choice of energy
providers and spending," said Phillip W. Tonge, President of North American
Mass Markets Energy for Direct Energy. "Connecticut policymakers made
significant strides towards evolving the retail electric markets this year,
and as a result, Direct Energy delivered on its promise that with the right
market structure we would serve residential customers."
Direct Energy is offering residential and small business customers a 12-
month fixed product, which at five percent below the utility price, will
provide consumers with peace of mind and predictability in a volatile energy
market. Building on its vision to help customers manage their energy costs
through both price options and energy efficiency measures, the company is also
providing free compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) kits to its first 5,000
residential and small commercial customers. The lifetime value of four CFLs
equals more than $200 in savings in energy costs.
The company brings financial stability and resources to the Connecticut
residential energy market as a part of the Centrica group of companies, ranked
by the 2007 Forbes Global 500 as the 7th largest in its class.
"Direct Energy has the financial resources, industry experience and
dedicated focus on customer service necessary to make a positive impact on the
energy and economic environment throughout Connecticut," said Mike Beck, Vice
President and General Manager for Direct Energy. "We are committed to making
the investments needed to build a long-term presence in the state."
While the number of Connecticut customers who are currently served by a
non-utility energy provider has been relatively low, Direct Energy expects
that figure to rise as residents are presented with new options for choosing a
provider that best serves their needs. According to a poll conducted in 2006
by the Retail Energy Supply Association, nine out of 10 registered voters in
Connecticut want the ability to choose their electric supplier, and seven in
10 consider competition to be the best way to deliver lower energy costs.
Direct Energy's U.S. business is headquartered in Houston, Texas, with
regional offices located in Stamford and Wallingford, Connecticut and Dublin,
Ohio. The company currently serves residential and commercial customers in
Texas, New York, Ohio, Michigan, and four Canadian provinces, and is an energy
supplier to commercial customers in eight other U.S. states and the District
of Columbia. The company has also made significant investments in natural gas-
fired and wind power generation in Texas, as well as natural gas assets in
