MIRAMICHI, NB, Aug. 11 /CNW Telbec/ - DEW Engineering and Development ULC
of Ottawa, Ontario and Miramichi, New Brunswick today announced the award of a
$130 million contract with the Department of National Defence resulting from a
competitive bid solicitation. The contract runs for four years and involves
the design and manufacture of 895 baseline shelters. The contract includes
engineering data and integrated logistics support with an option for up to 110
more shelters. The Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Peter MacKay
formally announced this important program today at DEW's Miramichi facility as
part of the Canada First Defence Strategy.
DEW Engineering, teamed with Weatherhaven of Vancouver as their primary
partner, along with other Canadian companies has created a "Team Canada"
approach to this program creating or maintaining 230 jobs throughout all
regions of Canada. The shelters have onboard power and HVAC systems and are
fully transportable by land, sea and air according to ISO standards allowing
for rapid deployment anywhere required by DND.

Both DEW and Weatherhaven expect that the shelters that will be produced
for this program for DND have both the potential to be utilized as offsets
against other DND programs - creating additional export jobs - and could be
utilized to both support and enhance the recently announced Northern Strategy
of the Government of Canada.
This contract, like all contracts of this magnitude must meet Canada's
Industrial and Regional Benefit policy which requires 100% direct and indirect
Canadian Content, and DEW is fully committed to achieving this requirement as
evidenced by the Canadian companies across Canada that will derive benefits
from this procurement.
