TORONTO, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - Traditionally, Valentine's Day is for expressing
love by giving cards and gifts of flowers and sweets.
On February 14 several dental hygienists will share in a different kind
of giving - A Gift from the Heart - when 24 owners of dental hygiene practices
across Ontario provide their services to the public at no cost.
"The one-day volunteer event has received overwhelming enthusiasm by a
number of practice owners," said dental hygienist Bev Woods, who co-ordinated
the project, and will also participate as the owner of Leading Edge Dental
Hygiene in Astra, Ontario.
Since September 2007 when the Ontario government enacted legislation to
allow dental hygienists to work outside the dental office, more than 80
independent clinics and mobile practices have opened throughout the province -
from Kanata to Toronto and from Kincardine to Timmins and various communities
"A Gift from the Heart will benefit members of the public who may be
financially unable to receive oral care or who have difficulty accessing
dental hygiene treatment and education services," said Ms Woods.
"It will also build awareness about the public's right to choose their
healthcare provider, and that dental hygienists have an important role to play
as members of the healthcare team."
Appointments for Valentine's Day will be taken on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Members of the public should check their local directory
for a dental hygiene practice in their community.
Dental hygiene is a regulated profession with more than 10,000 practising
dental hygienists in Ontario, making it one of the largest healthcare
professions in Ontario. With sound policies and standards, the regulatory
college ensures the public receives safe and ongoing comprehensive oral care.
Dental hygienists work collaboratively with other healthcare professions to
promote good oral health and overall health.
