David Gratzer joins Montreal Economic Institute as senior fellow

MONTREAL, Nov. 4, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) is proud to announce that renowned Canadian physician and author David Gratzer has joined it as senior fellow.

Dr. Gratzer is the author of celebrated works on health policy, including Code Blue: Reviving Canada's Health Care System (1999), a national bestseller in its fifth printing awarded the $25,000 Donner Prize for best Canadian public policy book, and The Cure: How Capitalism Can Save American Health Care (2006), with a foreword by Milton Friedman.

He has served as a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute of Public Policy in New York for nine years.

"The Montreal Economic Institute does some of the best public policy analysis in Canada and I am delighted to join their team of researchers," Gratzer declared.

MEI's president, Michel Kelly-Gagnon, said Gratzer's decision to choose to work with MEI after a spell with the Manhattan Institute is an expression of confidence in the Institute's ability to influence public policy debates across the country. "David will bring his considerable expertise to an issue, health care reform, which is the top concern of a majority of Canadians and has been one of our most important topics of interest for the past dozen years."

David Gratzer is a physician, with M.D. and B.Sc. degrees from the University of Manitoba, and post-graduate medical training at the University of Toronto. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Psychiatry) and certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with active licenses in Ontario and Pennsylvania, and affiliation at two universities. His research and clinical interests include mood disorders.

Dr. Gratzer is also the writer of hundreds of articles on politics, health care, and public health, published in numerous magazines and newspapers including The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, Los Angeles Times, The Globe and Mail, and Maclean's. He is a frequent media commentator. He lives in Toronto.

The Montreal Economic Institute is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit research and educational organization. Through its publications, media appearances and conferences, the MEI stimulates debate on public policies in Quebec and across Canada by proposing wealth-creating reforms based on market mechanisms. It does not accept any government funding.
