OSHAWA, ON, Sept. 5 /CNW/ - Oshawa is excited to have support from the
Honourable David Crombie on our vision for a modern, balanced harbour. On
September 12, 2007, Mr. Crombie was appointed by the federal government to
meet with community stakeholders and prepare a report on the future of
Oshawa's harbour. The City presented a harbour vision to Mr. Crombie and urged
him to support a modern, progressive direction for Oshawa's harbour.
Mr. Crombie submitted his report to the federal government in February
2008. Seven months later, it has been released publicly but it is not enough.
The report and its recommendations confirms and supports the City's vision for
the need of new ideas and a real commitment to restoring Oshawa's harbour as
an economic, and cultural powerhouse while preserving and protecting our
sensitive waterfront lands.
While the federal government acknowledged the Crombie Report, only general
comments have been made and there are:
- NO commitments to the report
- NO timeframe for implementing the recommendations
- NO financial guarantee.
Without clear commitments, timelines and the funds from the federal
government to support Mr. Crombie's recommendations, Oshawa will not realize
their harbour vision.
"The people of Oshawa have demanded that Port Oshawa and surrounding
harbour lands become a source of civic pride. For forty years the people of
Oshawa have been sorely disappointed," said Mayor John Gray. "David Crombie
has vindicated the people's vision as being the right one for our city. It is
now time for the federal government to implement their own consultant's
recommendations. Through Mr. Crombie's blueprint, coupled with the people of
Oshawa's vision, we will turn the harbour around from being the longest
running failure in our city's history to a beacon of success with the
realization of Port Oshawa's true potential. My Council colleagues and I are
committed to ensure the federal government delivers, not dithers."
The federal government needs to immediately step up and work with the
City of Oshawa to make our harbour vision a reality. The time for debate and
negotiations is over; the time for a new future is NOW!
The City of Oshawa is continuing a grassroots community campaign to
impress upon the federal government the significance of funding and
implementing David Crombie's recommendations. If you would like to be part of
realizing the waterfront's potential, call 905-436-5686 or e-mail
