Safety and performance record make OPG excellent choice to lead new build
TORONTO, June 16 /CNW/ - The selection of Ontario Power Generation (OPG)
to operate two new units on the Darlington site is good news for Durham
Region, for the nuclear industry, for the company and for Ontario, President
and CEO Jim Hankinson said following today's announcement by the Ontario
"I am very proud of the company and our employees," he said. "This is a
testimony to OPG's solid record of safety, and ongoing commitment to
operational performance in all aspects of our business."
OPG has safely operated nuclear facilities in Durham Region for more than
35 years. In 2007, Darlington Nuclear was recognized with an international
performance award by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO).
"The Darlington site is a solid choice for a new nuclear facility. We
have strong community support, a track record of safe operations and
long-standing ties to Durham Region," he said. "We also have a skilled
workforce and many of the key business infrastructure components are already
in place across Durham."
Hankinson added that while this is a key step in the process towards the
construction of a new nuclear station at the Darlington site, there is still
much work to be done before a new facility can be built. He noted the company
will complete the ongoing Environmental Assessment and licensing process. The
provincial government must also decide on a technology vendor for the project,
and financing and contracts have to be successfully negotiated before shovels
go into the ground.
